Objective:
Explains how to check and adjust sleep settings on macOS versions 11 through 15 to optimise power usage.

Steps:

  1. Open System Preferences (macOS 11-13) or System Settings (macOS 14-15):

    • For macOS 11-13, go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Battery for laptops or Energy Saver for desktops.
    • For macOS 14 and later, go to Apple menu > System Settings > Battery (for laptops) or Displays (for desktops).

  2. Adjust Battery and Power Adapter Settings (Laptops):

    • Under Battery, adjust the Turn display off after slider for when running on battery power.
    • Under Power Adapter, adjust the same setting for when your Mac is plugged in. Toggle Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off if needed.

  3. Enable Power Nap (Optional):

    • Enable Power Nap to allow background updates while sleeping, such as checking for emails or calendar events.

  4. Desktop Sleep Settings:

    • For desktops, use Energy Saver (macOS 11-13) or Displays > Turn display off on desktop slider (macOS 14+).

  5. Advanced Adjustments with Terminal (Optional):

    • Open Terminal and use pmset commands for custom sleep settings (e.g., pmset -g to view settings).
